Intrinsic motivation is performing an action or behavior because you enjoy the activity, you are doing it for your pleasure. This comes from inside the person. Extrinsic motivation is driven by external rewards such as money and praise. This type of motivation is from outside the individual. Both types of motivation affect performance. One who is intrinsically motivated will complete their tasks as told and will do it with a smile on their face. Their performance will constantly improve and will positively affect them. People who are extrinsically motivated will not be heading down a good path. They will only be completing their tasks for a reward ( like a raise in pay) or praise for doing the work they were already supposed to do. If they are not rewarded they will not be motivated to do their work. They will only complete tasks if given a reward for what they have done. If they stop receiving them they will eventually lose interest in working. Intrinsic motivation is better because the employee is doing their job the right way. They do as they are told and enjoy what they are doing. They do not expect a reward or praise. This provides a healthy environment for both the employee and employer.
